Ladle Furnace

A ladle furnace (LF) also known as a transfer ladle utilizes the roof like a typical electric arc furnace. An EAF utilizes an 8 to 25 megavolt ampere transformer. Three electrodes for arc heating are inserted and the ladle acts as the furnace shell.

Ladle furnaces are utilized to relieve the primary melter of secondary refining. This process creates a layer of slag that protects the refractory from arc damage and transfers heat to the liquid steel. During the process argon or electromagnetic stirring is applied for better heat transfer.
