Argon-Oxygen Decarburization (AOD)

Argon-Oxygen Decarburization (AOD) is the most dominate process for the generation of stainless, low-alloy and superalloy steels. Resco Products has been and is involved in this application with its ability to supply both dolomitic as well as magnesia-chrome refractory products. The AOD process became very popular because it created a more economical way to produce specialty steels by achieving higher metallic yields with lower material costs versus previous methods used. Scrap is first melted in an electric arc furnace (EAF) or induction furnace (IF) and then transferred to the AOD where it is decarburized and refined reducing the carbon levels below 0.05%. Argon and oxygen are injected through submerged tuyeres to reduce the oxidation of precious elements.

Resco works with the various AOD facilities to determine the best refractory product for their process to increase the number of heats or contact hours per campaign to achieve the lowest refractory operating costs possible.

Most commonly products sold include Dolomite and Mag-Chrome Brick. Dolomite brands utilized for AOD refractory include KD65Z-DOL and FG65-DOL. Mag-Chrome brands typically utilized for AOD refractory include RFG-93 and Exceline FG-95.
